Sprint MG Insight: Getting to know Wieger Sietsma

Apr 22, 2020

In Part 4 of Sprint MG’s “Getting to Know Lockdown Series”, we catch up with Goalkeeper Wieger Sietsma on football, life, aspirations and how he is fit and coping with the lockdown.

What is your number one career highlight?

It would be my first game for MK Dons against Swansea City in the Carabao Cup, it was a big game for MK Dons. Swansea were in the Premiership at the time and MK Dons were in League 1. It was my debut and what a game to be involved in.

What’s been the most challenging moment of your career?

The relegation from League 1 to League 2 with MK Dons. I was put in goal for the last 7 games as the first choice keeper broke his hand. It was a really tough time for Me and the team. The crowd were very hostile when we were on the pitch and carried on outside the stadium, it was crazy!

Who has been your biggest inspiration in football so far?

Iker Casillas of Real Madrid. He was my idol growing up and I managed to see him a few times live.

What advice would give to yourself at 16?

Just enjoy the game, is the most important thing. Work hard and if you are the best you will get to where you want to be.

What are your career aspirations?

I want to get back to playing in the UK and want to push for the number 1 jersey in League 1 over the next 2 to 3 years.

What is the hardest part of being a professional athlete?

In my opinion there is no hard part as I enjoy being a professional. It has always felt normal for me off of the pitch. The hardest part is on the pitch, when you have the pressure and you are not playing to well, but continuing to work hard gets you back.

How are you dealing with the lockdown and how are you keeping fit?

There is not a full lockdown here in Holland so its been fairly easy. Every morning I am doing my workout and running 5K, 7K or 10K which is monitored by an app I use.

What advice would you give to an upcoming player?

As a goalkeeper, listen and learn from the keepers you train with. Watch goalkeepers like De Gea and Allisson, you can learn a lot from these players. Work hard, train hard and enjoy your football.

How do you prepare yourself for a game?  Do you have any superstitions? Is there a particular pre-match meal you like to eat before a big game?

I never do the same thing before a game. The most important thing for me is to relax. After the warm up I will always go back to the changing room and have 3 espressos…. I don’t know many players that do that!
