Enhanced Player Transfers in England: SMG Applauds FA’s Updated GBE Criteria

Aug 5, 2023

At Sprint Management Group LTD (SMG) we get contacted daily from players that dream to play in England. The FA’s GBE criteria to be eligible for a work permit sets a high standard for players that can play in the UK. Whilst exiting the EU has seen the movement of players to be even more limited, there are fresh opportunities on the horizon. The recent changes announced by the English FA to the GBE Criteria will be welcomed by many players and will undoubtedly impact the landscape of player transfers in English football.

SMG extends its warmest welcome to the recent updates made by the English Football Association (FA) to the Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) criteria. These modifications provide substantial opportunities for Premier League and EFL clubs to recruit talent from leagues around the globe. In this blog post, we delve into the intricacies of these updates and their potential implications.

The New GBE Criteria

The FA’s latest initiative introduces a new category called “elite significant contribution” (ESC) players. Under this provision, English clubs can sign two overseas players who do not meet the conventional points-based GBE requirements. Furthermore, clubs have the option to include two additional ESC players provided certain criteria are met.

Qualifications for ESC Players

ESC players encompass a range of talents, including those who have featured in competitive games at youth or senior international level, logged at least five appearances in designated Band 1-5 leagues, or participated in continental competitions.

Significance of Banding Clubs

The revised GBE criteria employ a banding system that categorizes global domestic leagues into six tiers (Bands 1 to 6) and continental competitions into three tiers (Band 1 to Band 3). Leagues featured in Bands 1-5 present a straightforward path for English clubs to sign players, easing the transfer process if they possess available ESC slots.

Increased Prospects for Clubs and Players

The modifications to the GBE criteria present a wealth of opportunities for Premier League and EFL clubs. SMG acknowledges the positive impact of Major League Soccer’s (MLS) elevation from Band 4 to Band 3, streamlining player transfers directly from MLS to English clubs.

Players who play more than 80% of their team’s minutes in MLS can now secure the required GBE points without additional criteria.

SMG also commends the inclusion of new leagues in Band 5, such as the Italian Serie B, Japanese J1 League, and South Korean K League 1. This expansion enhances English clubs’ scouting capabilities and facilitates the signing of players from these leagues as ESC players, effectively broadening the talent pool.

Changing Transfer Landscape

In conclusion, the FA’s updated GBE criteria represent a transformative development for the player transfer landscape in English football. This progressive initiative fosters increased access to exceptional international talent for Premier League and EFL clubs. SMG encourages clubs to leverage these opportunities and bolster their squads with top-tier players from across the globe.
