Athlone Town sign Izzy Groves
Izzy Groves, a talented central midfielder, has officially joined Athlone Town for the 2025 season after her time with London City Lionesses.
Hailing from Pickering, Ontario, Canada, Izzy is the daughter of Linda Groves, who was born in England, and Hubert Junior ‘Beckenbauer’ Groves, a Jamaican international and Harbour View FC club legend recognized as Jamaica Player of the Year in 1981/82.
She played from 2016 to 2019 on a scholarship at Roberts Wesleyan University, where she graduated in 2020 with a pre-med degree in biology, earning the captaincy in her rookie year, receiving all-conference honours, and leading her team to the NCCAA D-1 Final 4.
In 2020, she signed with Vilaverdense in the Portuguese Second Division, where she captained the team to an undefeated season, finishing as the leading scorer and achieving promotion to the First Division, ultimately finishing 8th in their first year. During the 2022-23 season, she moved to France to play for US Saint-Malo in the French second division, where she made 23 appearances as a key holding midfielder.
On September 2, 2023, she joined the London City Lionesses but unfortunately suffered an injury early in the season that sidelined her for most of the year. Izzy possesses Jamaican, Canadian, and English passports and was called up to the Jamaican National Team in November 2023 for the Gold Cup qualifiers, making her debut against Panama on November 30, where she quickly became a fan favourite and played a vital role in both matches, including assisting Jamaica’s equalizer against Guatemala on December 3.
She has since received additional calls for friendlies against Chile and Brazil in 2024.
