As the end of the summer transfer window looms, one of the most common questions we receive from players in SprintMG (SMG) is, ‘Can I sign outside of the transfer window?’.
The answer is simple. If you are a player under contract, then no you can’t. That’s why transfer windows have been introduced.
But if you’re a free agent, then you can agree on a contract with a club at any time. The problem free agents face is that although they can sign a contract with a club it, doesn’t necessarily mean they can play straight away. Every league worldwide has a registration deadline to submit their official squads. Numerous leagues co-ordinate their squad registration deadlines with the closing of the transfer window. Others extend this deadline for a few weeks after the transfer window closes.
The Premier League allows clubs an additional 13 days to sign free-agent players and finalise the squad. The deadline for Premier League clubs to submit the registration of their 25-man squad is Wednesday 13, September 2023. Any players signed after that would have to wait till the opening of the next transfer window on 1 January 2024, to be included in the team’s squad and be eligible to play official matches.
